I have been to the Cass Sculpture Foundation before and I was pleased to see some old favourites were still there. There were a few interesting maquettes in the gallery space, including a real jewel by Hamish Black (on of my tutors at art college) but the new work in the park was universally poor. I may just be old fashioned, but if a sculpture is poorly made, is based on a banal idea and has scant regard for sculptural principles, like truth to materials, then what is left? The CSF seems to have bought into the idea that it doesn't matter how weak a sculpture is as long as it is built on a grand scale and I can see their dilemma, when the view from the park, over the fields, through the trees and down to the sea is as good as it is, then your sculptures need to be outstanding in order to compete; on this sunny day they all looked comically inadequate.
It's an interesting place to visit set in beautiful surroundings. It's our second visit and we will return. Highly recommended.
Cass Sculpture, set in beautiful surroundings, some of the installations, exhibits all very nice. This was my third visit over the many years, and, I enjoyed a very nice walk in the woodland with superb weather for a September afternoon. However, the devil as they say is always in the detail. Some of the installations could have been placed a little bit with more care, perhaps covering some of the ugly steel Base plates with woodland soil, so as to make the sculpture look as though at one with its surroundings. I know that such art is designed to be moved around at times, but for me it caused my eye to linger too long at the slight mistake. I have given a four star rating, it does deserve a five star but perhaps in the future it may earn one. Cass sculpture is a place to visit, a place to take picnic and to enjoy the woodland and surrounding views, ideal for families. For an individual using a wheelchair this is very accessible. Toilet facilities also on site and picnic area.
An amazing place to spend the day! We enjoyed most of the 53 sculptures/installations scattered around the forest. Worth buying annual subscription if you live close because you will definitely want to visit again.
I am ashamed to say it is at least two years since I visited this lovely, meditative and relaxing sculpture park. The park itself is delightful to walk around and the sculptures I saw were striking and original, most of them defying my expectations. I have only happy memories of walking through with an old colleague and friend, admiring and discussing the sculptures and the park, quite apart from catching up and making each other laugh.
